Greece: Lack of individual and social responsibility in relation to their peers and the school environment

Greece: Lack of individual and social responsibility in relation to their peers and the school environment

In the 2o Gymnasio Geraka the European project ERASMUS+ “BePart” was implemented throughout the school year online through the webex platform, due to the Covid pandemic. Nevertheless, there has been great progress and both its implementation and diffusion have progressed to a very good level.

The students of the project worked on the issue of: “Lack of individual and social responsibility in relation to their peers and the school environment” through the EAR Model of Youth Participation. The students played a theater-forum, which was shooted in our school yard. After that, they claimed that they were more aware of issues like bullying, respect of others and environmental issues.

In order to improve their school environment, they sought cooperation with Teachers’ Association, Parents’ Association, Students’ Council, Staff of school.

They also created a survey submitted by the majority of the students of our school. The key results of this survey guided our students’ actions.

 Implementation tangible results:

  1. Exterior painting of school.
  2. The classrooms were painted with colors that resemble nature (green for green valleys, blue for sea, yellow and orange for sun).
  3. Cleaning of toilets (Door and wall painting, Tile cleaning, Replacement of light bulbs).
  4. The curtains were washed, sewn, new knots were inserted.
  5. Old historical maps adorn the walls of the classrooms.
  6. School Garden (Enrichment of our herbs, Creation of a small greenhouse for our zucchini).
  7. Guidelines for measures for the pandemic (masks, distance, antiseptic).
  8. Guidelines for dealing with bullying and cyberbullying.

Our students organized also the 1st students meeting and participated in the 2nd and 3rd ones.

Implementation intangible results:

The students acquired presentation, organization and communication skills. They were very much involved in the project, exercising creative and critical thinking, coming up with new ideas that were very eager to implement. This contributed to their becoming more responsible and active citizens.

Great emphasis was given to the diffusion of the project which was done online in the following stages:

Many students after the presentation made their own suggestions for improvement for our school.
