25 May Spain: Respect and equality between students, teachers and school staff

A committee of students from Virolai School, in Barcelona (Spain), has been working for six months on an implementation method to achieve a higher level of respect and equality between all students, teachers and staff members at their education centre.
Through many implementation reports and meetings, we have ended up thinking of an effective way to make that idea possible:
- First, all students were divided into different small groups and we analysed diverse Models for Youth Participation (MYP).
- After that, we explained to each other what they consist of and voted for the one we prefered, which was Youth Participation in Finland. This model describes the way that children and young people participate in public consultation and the decision-making process in Finland. If it is properly applied, the system is highly effective in schools. With just debating in small groups about a couple of questions, such as how they feel about the teaching of equality and respect, students can find out if their views and ideas are taken into consideration by the adults in their school centre.
- Our goal was to collect all the students’ opinions about specific subjects, especially concerning our school and the theme we chose at the beginning of the project (respect and equality). We did that by scheduling dynamic group debates with different classes and writing down their final conclusions about the questions asked by the moderators. One person in every group would explain the conclusions to another group so they could discuss again and end up with an extended idea of what students think about this matter.
- Afterwards, those ideas would be presented in a reunion to the directive committee to be approved and applied in our school. We will be informing and diffusing details about the process and results through Social Media and upcoming student-led meetings.
- As the project is still underway, we have yet to evaluate the tangible/intangible results but would be happy to update you on these at a later date.
